a view from my window

shot at around 11 this morning while i was prepping to work. the winds here, as seen, are disturbing the stillness of the trees. a nice sight, but not really. it was july 2004 when a tornado hit a neighboring block, next to this area, destroying many houses and trees, fortunately sparing lives. but that was enough to keep everyone here on guard, especially on this season.

minutes later...mura na sya'g night time, lami ibalik og katug. minus the heavy winds, this place is really peaceful. that i will definitely miss when we finally leave here. tissue please...

pigging out

Pig-out, as defined, is the act or an instance of voracious eating by a person or group. I've no problem with that, my problem is how to acquire all of these stuffs (photos are provided for visual treats)...today. I already had grapes, pistachio and some chocolates (given by a friend as a gift) last night while watching a movie, and I blamed my current tonsil irritation right now for that indulgence, and for the past few days' eating binge. There's no medical explanation for that though.

This strong affection for sweet food started a month ago, that I have to buy too a bar of chocolate and some chocolate-coated biscuits every time I have the chance to be in the grocery store. And I'm afraid this may last forever, well, until the wet season is gone. But wet season or not, food will always have its appeal on me. And it shows!

movie reviews part 2.3

The Sweetest Thing (2002)

Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Selma Blair

I wonder where the hell I was when this movie hit the theaters in 2002?!? It was just tough luck that when I was browsing through piles and piles of VCDs at Video City looking for a comedy flick to complete my hoard for the week I saw a copy of this movie. And in my room a few hours later, I wasn't just giggling but laughing at loud while watching it over a bottle of Coke bantam. Oh yeah, that part where they do an impromptu singing of Aerosmith's "I don't wanna miss a thing" hit, that is really hilarious. Also, that part in the CR where Cameron is playing in the wall's drawings that lead to a hole, where she stupidly takes a peek and voila! there it IS! And on the other side is her friend doing her thing in the men's urinal, and voila! she flies!...That is comedy!

Van Helsing (2004)

Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale

I am not a fan of vampire movies and anything with Van Helsing's genre, I watched it because of Bram Stoker's Dracula that I'm currently reading, and I was piqued by Van Helsing's character. The Van Helsing in this movie is more exciting than in the book, I realized. And it appeared that there is a big twist to the characters here, if to compare them to the book that made Dracula, Van Helsing and other famous characters created by Stoker. That actually, I think, made this movie good, apart from it is packed with a lot of adventures for the adventure-hungry moviegoers. Dracula here, though, he's maybe more sinister, is not scary enough. Just another action film...

Dead Mary (2007)

Dominique Swain

A group of friends having a reunion in some secluded cabin. And there's this ghost that starts possessing them, and killing every single one of them until they all die. Goodness, is Hollywood running out of good plots for a horror flick???

Coming Home (1978)

Jane Fonda, Jon Voight, Bruce Dern

I picked this one after that guy from Video City told me I should take at least 4 VCDs to get a free notebook (what you get on your third visit within the promo period), and I wanted some drama that day (there were already horror and comedy in my collection). So that's the story behind why this classic film of all the films there got in my bag. And in fairness, it is good. I mean, it's drama, and there's romance, and they are executed well. It's even sexy to the nth level, to my surprise. Anyway, I need more good films these days to celebrate the return of my once green tv. Yehey!!!

a reef check

As promised, I'm posting the shots I took while underwater (save for the two), while checking Minantao Reef, and comparing it to Talima. The camera, a disposable instamatic one, was again provided by the organizer. That was really cool. :) I would have wanted to own the real thing, but I gathered, the price of the waterproof cover alone already costs a king's ransom, busa magpuyo tah! So anyway, these are the photos...

Project Seahorse field biologist doing the coral survey. This is in Minantao Reef, Caubian Is, Lapulapu City.

One single dynamite blast gives you this result: pieces of dead corals. This is how Minantao looks up close and personal.

13 minutes away by motorized boat from Minantao is Talima Reef, Olango Is. At least the place, bec it's kind of protected (but only very recently, I guess), still has this sea urchin. Yeah, good luck!

Still in Talima, a big blue jellyfish romancing a coral. Yikes!

The people...nga gaduka.

The people...that matter. Chevron and Project Seahorse people. The ones behind the save Minantao project.

Nanobra ang film. Bow! That's all, folks!

it was my birthday yesterday

...and i had a solemn celebration , thanks to these people (see their faces below). i did miss going to church though. i dunno, i'm just not used to lighting a candle or two and saying my thanks for a new year in my life. i give thanks, yeah, but the vatski way ;) heaven knows i'm always thankful for everything, and i need not elaborate on that stuff, not my kind. so anyway, the solemnity of yesterday's event was caused by this bunch of "people." there are two of us who share the same birthday, meaning i should share the limelight with her too. pfft!

now, on to the real thing!

any party, no matter how small, should have these...

the pains and gains of being an eldest

Note: This post is based largely on interviews with eldest children, and some on this blogger’s personal experience.

The pains in the life of an eldest child:

1. The responsibility issue. Even if your parents won't impose on you to help them run the family they've both started, you will still have no choice but to help them: educate your younger siblings, or pay for every damn thing that your parents can't (or sometimes won't because they think and believe you have the capacity to carry these extra loads on your virgin shoulders. Shut up!). But of course, you belong to this family, and you just so love everyone there; you will never try to run away from them no matter how tempting the situation can be.

2. The last best hope. If your parents can't decide on major things, you get to be the last and only hope. And in most cases, it's real hard; especially if they believe you're smarter than them, and they just like sit there while you try to squeeze your brain to suffocation for any reasonable ideas to pop up. See, you can never really ran away from them, otherwise, you will all be camping in the streets because they’ve already sold your house while you were away. Such an exciting life!

3. Paying for your own things. This shall commence when you start earning your own money. Gone are the days when you just wash the plates (or simply hug mama dear) for a new pair of shoes or pants (or a new bike for your birthday). If you still have this charm on your parents, it only shows how unfair this world has become! And not only for your own, because if things get unlucky in your part of this planet, chances are a big chunk of what you earn also goes to the family rugrats, your younger siblings!

4. Understanding the immature rugrats. Their needs, their wants, or even petty things like fighting over petty stuffs, constantly. This has its good side too, like, you--being their eldest--can always give them a beating or two if the situation worsens (especially when the real bosses are out). I've never done it to any of my two siblings though, because they'll surely retaliate! Those rugrats!!!

5. The family accountant, secretary, sergeant-at-arms, calendar, et cetera. In short, you have your own share of the family headaches too! A share that can never be converted to cash. Life truly sucks!

However, there are perks of being an eldest, too. Here are a few:

1. You get to have your own slaves. Your younger siblings. I've got two slaves in the house whose main task is to clean up my room. *wink

2. First-borns are most loved, especially by their mothers. Mm-hmm!

3. You get to decide first on most things in the household, like, which room in the house should go to you, et cetera, before your younger siblings could protest. And you get to be the first person to own a pc, and other extra gadgets in the house (because of course, you also pay the bills!).

4. You get your parents' trust without asking for it, like, they give you the money to pay the bills (and the rest for your own consumption, as they don't normally ask for the sukli. speaking of trust.)

5. You’re richer than your siblings. Though your money will likely go to your family's expenses. But still, you can always indulge yourself with your own money, just don’t show your payslip to mama.

The world may be unfair, but unfortunately, we can’t sue it. So, can we cry now?

Amo: Inday bumili ka nga ng mga isda, ay oo nga pala, inglesera ka na ngayon, would you please buy many fishes for this week's meals?

Inday: Judging by your statement, I believe you meant a variety of fish. The term fishes though rarely used, connotes a plethora of different kinds of the said gilled aquatic creatures. But the most pressing question before I go to the wet market would be: what type of fish? Fillet or not? Frozen or fresh? (pauses) Ahh…given the meager budget afforded by this household's quasi-peasant class taste, I assume I shall source the staple "galewng-gong". Yes?

Amo: Eh kung mag-empake ka na kaya?!

MPA hopping

Last monday, this blogger was invited by Chevron/Caltex for two snorkeling activities at two marine protected areas (MPA) in Lapulapu City. The purpose of which was to compare the one sanctuary that receives protection from the LGU to the one that has been neglected for years.

The Minantao Reef in barangay Caubian (a small island 10 mins away from Hilton wharf by a motorized boat) is in a very bad state. Almost all corals are blasted, the seabed is littered with evidence of such destruction. Really sad. The Talima Reef (Olango Is--about 13 mins from Caubian), on the other hand, though a far cry from Pescador Island's beauty or any of the Moalboal sanctuaries', or of the Lagundi Reef's, is showing some potentials of its own to be the next favorite dive spot in Cebu. Talima, I gathered, has actually been protected from dynamite fishing, the very thing that destroys corals. Minantao, for its part, is already under Chevron's (with the help of Project Seahorse, an NGO) three-year P3-million project to restore it.

And presenting the people behind this conservation project...

The foreigners in this photo are from Chevron, and the young women there are marine biologists from Project Seahorse. Mao ni'ng mga bayhana ang hinungdan nga naikog na ko ron sa akong pagkatawo. Way saysay! buhuhu...

...and the islands (they probably make up more than half of the country's 7,100plus islands. i think.)

Olango Island. Diri siguro to, exactly on this spot, nasakpan 'tong mga Hapon nga nagchukchak chinis, noh? Kaluoy sa isla.

Lighthouse (kinda). After seeing very ordinary sights underwater, we decided to venture in this area. Kung di lang gubaon ang hagdanan ani'ng payaga, sigurado nitungtong nako ani. Hek hek...

"Buko juice." After the trip, we stopped over at Hilton to freshen up and for some snacks. There, I unwittingly ordered "buko juice" bec I already had two cans of coke while on the boat, to hopefully wash away the sin. Buko juice in most restos that I've been to is served in a drinking glass, pero sa Hilton, sus! bantug ra dugay kayo naabot. When I saw the waiter holding it, lami nalang itago sa ilawom sa lamisa. Maayo nala'ng wa sa'y libog akong tupad. Hahays...mag-inusbanay pa!

Fast fact: Did you know Viva mineral water in Hilton costs P110? Ang buko juice siguro, lapas P200. Ingun ana lang!

Photos underwater will be posted soon. With a more dramatic caption on each...pfft!

guilty

Former Phil. Pres. Joseph "Erap" Estrada
Guilty. But there's a long way to go actually. Erap's conviction (being found guilty of plunder by the Sandiganbayan, which slapped him a life sentence imprisonment) could well be reversed to acquittal by the Supreme Court. A minor error in the Sandiganbayan's decision is what the high court needs to quash today's verdict. That easy.
But who is laughing now? I was smiling when I heard the news this morning straight from GMA7's live coverage, but my smile was not for Erap's fate, but for what this country is actually capable of doing. It's a former president there it convicted. It's too good to be true, really.

loving love

I read an article about the difficulty of letting go... because people love the idea of being in love.

I don't get it why there are people who love to crucify themselves for a love that isn't theirs. When they know all along it's a torture there. Martyrdom? Shut up!

movies as elixir of life

Suiquijor

Assunta de Rossi, Ian Veneracion, Yul Servo

It's lame, they could have put more thrills in it. They have already established a good plot to start with, there should have been more goosebumping scenes to compensate for a long wait of the real actions, which become predictable in the later part, as what happens to the first victim (of the barang) also happens to the rest. And not much happens to the mambabarang himself! Except that he dies, too, with that simple counter-potion that the remaining three victims drunk. Like that. Or we should have been showed a lot of scary faces of that mambabarang (like that in the picture) while his victims are on the verge of death, not just himself being an ordinary old farmer walking with his stick plastered all over the movie. And his walking around doesn't seem to end.

Freedomland

Samuel L. Jackson, Jullianne Moore

Everyone in the community has been searching for Moore's "lost" child. And I don't know what's the problem with the people in this movie, they keep on fighting until the end. And there's so much talking here, I love it! I think I will have to stick with horror movies. Not much thinking required there.

Saw III

Tobin Bell

I thought Hostel was the grossest movie I've seen in my entire adulthood, dia pa diay lain. And I was, again, too stupid to pick this one from the shelf, I've never appreaciated movies with this genre (I watched Hostel bec of my papa Jay Hernandez, fyi). The cover does not have the title, and I almost kicked my pc when I learnt I was to watch Saw III. And bec I paid P16 for its rent, I watched it anyway. And guess what, there's not much story in there except for some pointless killings in the name of some asshole's games! HUH!!!

The Sleeping Dictionary

Hugh Dancy, Jessica Alba

This is good. The story isn't that powerful, though. It's just all about a forbidden love of a young Englishman John Truscott (Dancy) and his sleeping dictionary (a custom there where a woman is picked to sleep with a foreigner to teach him her society's habits and language) Selima (Alba), but its location (in some remote place with rivers and falls and mountains) makes it riveting. And Jessica Alba is so sexy here (makatomboy! LOL), she really fits the character she plays. This was shown sometime in 2003, most probably before she became so sikat like these days when she can turn down offers that will ask her to show some skin. Why?
